Helicoil - Free Running

What is the purpose of a helicoil insert?

A helicoil, commonly referred to as a thread insert, is an essential element for many professionals who use screw connections.

Its main function is to repair or reinforce damaged or worn threads in various materials such as metal or plastic.

When installed in the receiving threads of the tapped part, the helicoil acts directly on the shear strength. During installation, thehelicoil compresses under the effect of the tension exerted by the screw, reinforcing and holding your assembly securely in place.

The helicoil is available in 304 stainless steel and takes the form of a spring inserted into a previously tapped hole, creating a new internal thread.

With a larger outside diameter than the original hole, it reinforces the thread. Once in place, thehelicoil provides a new, wear-resistant thread, ready to accept a bolt or screw.

It is mainly used in materials with low shear strength, such as aluminum or aluminum-magnesium alloys.

A helicoil allows you to :

  • Repair damaged threads quickly and easily.
  • Reinforce threaded holes in delicate materials.
  • Optimum resistance to corrosion and extreme temperatures.

Available in a variety of threads (metric, UNC, UNF, BSF), helicoil thread inserts are offered in the form of kitsincluding diameter options and various assortments.

Visit Gardette Industries catalog for a selection of standard and fine-pitch thread inserts.

What are the special features of a "Free Running" mesh insert?

It's worth noting that a thread insert is generally made of stainless steel.

Our thread inserts are manufactured from high-strength stainless steel wire that has been formed into a "diamond" section to precise dimensional standards. Once installed, the insert provides a precision female thread with excellent surface finish and high strength (tensile strength of at least 1400 N/mm²).

Made from A2 stainless steel, Free Running helicoils guarantee greater resistance to wear and corrosion.

The advantages of using a Free Running mesh insert

Protection against thread wear: helicoil Free Running provides much greater resistance to frequent loosening and tightening of your assemblies, in all possible materials such as aluminum, magnesium, titanium, copper, steel and plastic.

Reduced weight and space: thanks to the maximum load-bearing capacity of a helicoil, fewer fixing points are required and screw dimensions can be reduced. This saves material, installation space and weight, while maintaining the same or higher requirements.

Balanced clamping force distribution: with a Free Running helicoil, static and dynamic loads are distributed more evenly between the different parts of the thread. Flexible thread inserts compensate for pitch and angle errors to achieve ideal transmission of force between screw and thread.

Which mesh insert to choose?

For traditional assemblies and assemblies subject to assembly and disassembly, we recommend the Free Running helicoil range.

For assemblies in which the assembly must not loosen despite shocks, vibrations or constant movement, thehelicoil Screw Grip range is recommended.

Note: our helicoils are generally compatible with thread inserts, installation tools and taps from other manufacturers.

All our thread inserts are standardized (usually to din 8140) and therefore have the same dimensions. On the other hand, for certain references, we also work to the following standards: din 65536, en 2944, ln 9039, ln 9490, ln 9499, nasm 21209, etc.
