Pins

What is a pin?

Modern mechanisms often rely on discrete but indispensable components, and the pin is a prime example.

A pin is a metal cylinder designed to withstand relatively low shear forces. Pins are used to attach, connect or secure mechanical components. There are many different types of pin, each designed to meet specific needs.

A pin is used when :

  • Securing one part to another: solidarization
  • Positioning one part relative to another: positioning
  • Acting as an axis within an assembly: rotation
  • Acting as a safety component in an assembly: securing

Pins play a crucial role in the safety and stability of assemblies and equipment in various industries. A pin provides a mechanical link between 2 parts.

How are the pins made?

There are a number of different techniques and state-of-the-art machines for manufacturing pins (steel pins and stainless steel pins).

In this section, we'll introduce you to the exclusive manufacturing process we use within Gardette Industries and the P3G group for pin design and manufacture.

A machine specially designed for the manufacture of pins is responsible for shaping your part according to your requirements (cylindrical pin, threaded pin, conical pin, spring pin, splined pin...).

It all starts with an iron bar, in the material best suited to your needs (stainless steel, brass, steel, aluminum, etc.).

Once the raw material is fed into the machine, whether in bar or drawn form, the real magic of pin production begins.

The machine cuts the bar with absolute precision, to the exact dimensions required. Each pin is carefully trimmed to fit your specific project.

After this crucial step, each pin is meticulously cleaned and oiled. This step is crucial as it facilitates friction between the part and the machine, ensuring smooth, trouble-free operation.

Lubrication also extends the life of each pin, ensuring long-term strength and reliability.

At Gardette, we understand the importance of every detail in the manufacture of high-quality pins. That's why we use specially designed machines and rigorous procedures to ensure that every pin we manufacture meets your exacting requirements.

Depending on the type of pin required, chamfers or other special features can be added using other specialized machines. machining and bar turning.

And depending on its application, the pin can also be given a surface treatment if required.

The rest of the manufacturing process depends on the type of pin you select.

The different types of pins manufactured by Gardette Industries

Our cylindrical pins

Cylindrical pins are essential fasteners with smooth shanks, no grooves or threads, and can be drilled and threaded to your specific requirements.

The ingenious design of a cylindrical pin allows customization with chamfered or domed ends, to perfectly match your application.

Cylindrical pins are highly valued for their ability to hold mechanical parts together quickly and reliably.

Cylindrical pins are often used in fields such as industrial machinery, laboratory equipment and the automotive industry, where regular assembly and disassembly is required.

Threaded cylindrical pins are ideal for blind holes. This pin has a flattened surface which prevents air compression, thus avoiding any deterioration of the hole or risk of the pin being rejected from the housing.

These pins are ground to m6, h8 or h11 quality tolerances, depending on their shape. This makes them ideal for use in precision mechanics, general engineering, machine building and all applications requiring a precise fit.

In addition, tapping allows the use of a pin extractor for easy removal.

We also have conical pinswhich can be tapped.

Ground pin din 6325

Ground pins are fasteners from the cylindrical pin family. They are manufactured with extreme precision to ensure a perfect fit between the pin and the mounting hole. These pins are manufactured to micron precision levels and offer exceptional surface quality.

What sets them apart from conventional pins is their outer diameter tolerance, which makes them even more unique.

Grooved pin

Grooved pins are cylindrical fasteners with grooves running the length of the pin, allowing the pin to bend and compress. Typically, there are 3 splines arranged at an angle of 120°.

Unlike a ground pin, a splined pin requires no special adjustment tolerances, as the elasticity of the splines adapts to the diameter of the hole in which it is inserted. A diameter slightly larger than the nominal diameter ensures a perfect fit and therefore excellent pin retention.

The elastic pin

Elastic pins, also known as "Mécanindus pins", are cold-rolled and rolled, making them split along their length.

The pin's incredible elasticity enables it to remain firmly in place in its housing, without the need for any special precautions, even when the ends are free and the hole is between 2 precise diameters.

Our safety pins

What are the pin standards?

Our pins, like all our mechanical parts, are subject to rigorous quality and safety standards to ensure their reliability and longevity. In France, the most common standards for pins are DIN, a German standard, and ISO, an international standard.

These standards define the criteria for the materials, dimensions and mechanical properties of our pins, ensuring their safety and reliability.
